Conundrum Indeed!!

I don’t get it!!

My physics training has always deprived me of a certain level of enjoyment from the science fiction genre. As much as I have tried, I could almost never get into anything serious with “time travel” or “parallel Universes” in it. To me time traveling is a lazy writer’s excuse to avoid creating a real plot.  And I’m too much of a Copenhagen interpretation guy to accept parallel Universes.  Just can’t do it.

That is why I was so surprised by my utter admiration for and attraction to the TV Series Fringe, which has copious uses for BOTH time travel AND parallel Universes.  Okay, Season 5 kinda let me down but still it was an enjoyable ride throughout.  Was it as epic as the re-imaged Battlestar Galactica? Probably not. But it did deal with the total annihilation of not just one but two humanities.  Was it as romantic as the X-Files? Probably not.  But there were more love stories in this series than just what’s between Mulder and Scully.

Overall I will make the rare recommendation for Fringe and put it as the only member in the list of movies and TV series that I enjoy watching with both time travel and parallel Universes in its plot lines.


Teleportation Equals Death to True Love

Here is a true conundrum to all of us nerds who are also capable of romantic endeavors aka matters of the heart not just of the mind (or brain if you are so neurologically inclined). Imagine the not-too-distant future where teleportation is just another commonplace green technology to rid us of our dependence on fossil fuel, much like the electric car. Yay! Beam me up, Scotty! Or Geordi if you belong to my generation. But in any case, don’t you realize that if teleportation were indeed possible, that would imply that we could clone people!? I’m talking about the technological prowess to break down and transport all necessary information right down to the atomic/molecular level and re-ensemble all of it to teleport me from Chinatown in San Francisco to Koreatown in Los Angeles. Yay! Beam me up now!

You see? If we can do that, what’s to prevent us from sending the same information to Seoul, Korea at the same time? Man, I could be paying a visit to two different room bangs in two different cities simultaneously! The physics of cloning is now clear! Cool!

Not so cool! Because that would really mess things up. Biologically, that means I would live forever because I could just keep replicating my transported self over and over again. However, this conundrum is not relevant at this time. A later blog post perhaps? What’s really upsetting to us romantic nerds is that cloning is a direct assault to the holy concept of “The One” aka “True Love”. By definition, “True Love” is one-and-only (c.f. how to find true love) so how can we have two of me if I’m your “The One”. Right, girl? Baby, I can explain… Please don’t run away… Hey, where you going!?

See the conundrum!? But wait! Maybe we can’t really transport anything perfectly because there is that problem of quantum coherence (look it up!) Maybe it’s not really the same old me that shows up in K-town!? I swear I feel like a different person in K-town but that’s a different story. Anyway, if the teleported me isn’t me, that would mean that we’re not technically teleporting! So what do I give up: scientific fantasy or romantic fantasy?

The Einstein Epiphany Type II

I don’t know about you.  But like more than 99.9725% of the physicists out there, I too had my Einstein epiphany type II moment not too dissimilar to Sheldon’s brief encounter with Dennis Kim in Episode 12 of Season 1 of The Big Bang Theory.  To me the Einstein epiphany type II is the first definitive moment in a physicist’s career that the said physicist realizes firmly that there is basically no way in hell that he can ever compete with or excel against one of his peers, much less one junior to his experience.  The moment is often followed by a sensation of alternating awe and despair, denial and anger, and perhaps even humility and humiliation.  The last one may not occur as some physicists are not capable of humility.  🙂

The day before my first oral exam in my graduate school days, I had attended a lecture given by one rather shy and youthful looking Professor Edward Witten at the Strings ’95 conference at the University of Southern California.  Around that time, the superstring community was already super excited (no pun intended) about a paper that Dr Witten and Dr Seiberg had written recently that dealt with some exact solution of an esoteric gauge theory called N=2 supersymmetric Yang Mills, something about some topological invariant that was crucial in proving the concept of “duality”.  So before the talk, I was all expected to learn about this new invariant and the so-called Seiberg-Witten equations.  And I was sure that it was going to be something that would go way over my head and subsequently bore me to sleep and therefore once again allow me to dismiss string theories as a super waste of time.

But Professor Witten didn’t talk about his famed equations.  Not at all.  Instead, Professor Witten simply started the lecture by telling the audience in his shy and sheepish voice that just last night, he was thinking about why we live in a 4-dimensional spacetime.  Why do we observe the Universe around us macroscopically as a smooth 4-dimensional spacetime manifold he asked.  He then went over to the slide projector (no, we didn’t have laptops back then!) and started dribbling down his thoughts methodically.  He started introducing all the five candidates of superstring theories.  He argued with clarity and matter-of-factly why each one of them can be viewed as a valid description of nature.  And then Professor Witten proceeded to demonstrate (and convinced me!) that these theories are all “dual” to one another.  In other words, with the right set of surgical transformation rules and procedures, you can turn one theory into the other.   See, they are all but different aspects of the same thing!  But then there are five of them!  That can’t be right?!  Which one of these rules supreme?!  We must be missing something, Professor Witten argued.  Ah, all these theories are 10-dimensional (except for one actually but that’s minor detail).  No, no, no, to complete the picture, we need to introduce an extra dimension, Professor Witten said in his now confident and god-like voice.  Bingo!  The sixth and unifying theory must be a 11-dimensional theory.  It must be.  Couldn’t be anything else.  Mystery of the mysterious theory solved!  Ladies and gentlemen, I assure you that nobody in the distinguished audience had a clue of what Professor Witten was going to talk about before he stepped up to the podium that day.  Boy, right in front of my eyes, on the day before my first oral exam on the topic of string tension and the Chern-Simon susceptibility in the comparatively child-like 3-dimensional SU(2) world, I witnessed the birth of M-theory and the genesis of what we now refer to as the second superstring revolution.

Anyways, that was my Einstein epiphany type II moment.  I promise you that it was a hell of a lot worse than my type I moment.  As a result, I am now an Oompa Loompa of Science in Silicon Valley.


Greatest Sequel of All Time

Anybody can emulate great things.  But only true geniuses can take something great and make it even greater!  Take for example the Special Theory of Relativity.  How special is that theory, you may ask?  I’m talking about space time continuum, man!  Time appears to slooooooooooow down when the starship approaches warp one, not to mention the shrinkage!  The shrinkaaaaaaaaaaage?  How can you top that!?  Well?  General Theory of Relativity, y’all, that’s how.  Check it out.  Gravity is just the curvature of a 4-dimensional space time manifold.  That’s all.  That’s not evolutionary.  That’s not even revolutionary.  That’s revolutionary on top of something that’s already revolutionary.  Revoltionary squared?  🙂   That my friends is THE greatest sequel of all time.  And only Einstein could do that.

On that note, let me tell you about the greatest movie sequels of all time.  In no particular order since there are only a few of them.

Awesomest Movie Sequels

  • Kung Fu Panda II
    • I saw this movie over the Memorial weekend with my kids.  They had a blast.  And I almost cried, emphasis on the word almost, because it was a very emotionally moving movie.  I thought it was worlds better than the first one and the first one wasn’t that bad to begin with.  Good job, Jack Black.  I know he didn’t really do much.  But still.  Pretty.  Pretty.  Pretty good.
  • Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
    •  One word: Yoda.  Go ahead.  Contradict me.
  • The Godfather: Part II
    • Curiously G2 beat G1 only to be followed by G3 the same way Episode 5 beat Episode 4 only to be followed by Episode 6!
  • Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
    • The first five minutes of the movie was already better than the entire Fellowship IMHO.  And add to that the Battle of Helm’s Deep?  Heavens!
  • Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
    • Kicking Sauron’s butt at Mount Doom.  Pure good vs evil.  Not as great as the General Theory of Relativity but still pretty…  pretty…  pretty good.

That’s about it for me.  Oh I guess I left out Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde.  How could I forget that!?
